Stargazing darter distribution in the Black River drainage is widespread and local loss should not affect the species; however, the species' distribution is limited to the middle section of the Ouachita River and local loss is likely to adversely affect the species. In light of these findings, the current conservation status is warranted; however, a Federal listing of candidate status should only be warranted for the Ouachita River population.
